On coats, backpacks, sweaters and dangling from cell phones around Seoul are tiny symbols of hope for AIDS victims and their families in far-off South Africa. Nope, these aren’t your usual AIDS ribbons. In fact they are much more adorable, fashionable, personable and profound. They are beaded people-like pins called Little Travellers.
The purchase of one of these little creatures represents much more than another charity to support. It represents an idea that one grassroots community can directly impact positive change in the lives of another grassroots community. 100% of the proceeds of each doll make its way back to South Africa to support the one hundred crafters, their families, and their community. The project is a partnership with the Hillcrest AIDS Centre in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province, a province that is host to a 40% infection rate among adults alone.
The founding Little Travellers Chapter started with a small university community in Winnipeg, Canada. Since then, chapters have sprouted in almost every major city in Canada, south to North Carolina in the United States, and as of October 2007, across the ocean to South Korea. Little Travellers Korea is a not-for-profit group based in Seoul that works to promote HIV/AIDS awareness in Korea and provide income to women associated with the Woza Moya project from the Hillcrest AIDS Centre in Durban, South Africa. Our primary mission is to sell handmade pins created by these women, who either have AIDS or are directly affected by the disease through their family and community. 리틀 트래블러스의 역사
리틀 트래블러스 단체는 아프리카의 빈곤과 HIV/AIDS 퇴치에 진심어린 도움이 되고자했던 민간인들로 구성되었습니다. 2005년 마니토바 대학에서 남아프리카의 힐 크레스트 에이즈 센터에서 사랑을 담아 만든 재미있는 비즈 인형을 판매하여 얻은 수익금으로 센터 측에 기대 이상의 지원품을 보내면서 첫 출발을 하게 된 이 운동이야말로 진정한 민간 프로젝트입니다.
“작은 여행자들”이라는 사랑스런 애칭이 붙여진 이 인형은 기금을 모으고, HIV/AIDS 환자들인 인형 공예가분들의 어려운 상황을 인식시키는 기회가 되었으며, 에이즈 센터의 스태프들 역시 쉼 없는 열정으로 도움을 주기 위해 헌신하고 있습니다.
이제 리틀 트래블러스는 그 발걸음을 세계로 향합니다.
